The 2023 Puppy Bowl is bigger than ever! With 122 pups from 67 different shelters and rescues, Team Ruff and Team Fluff will roll, drool, tail wag and tumble for a chance to win the Wayfair “Lombarky” trophy.

Hey, everyone! It’s me, your attention-loving and tail-wagging news hound!
The time has arrived once again for a special #JournoDog edition, marking the big game that is Puppy Bowl 2023! It captures the world’s attention and there are so many parties and news stories focused on those playing the game. Even the President’s newest rescue pup is making an appearance!
It’s “full of paws and awws,” as those in the know continue to tell me.
For those not familiar with how this three-hour Animal Planet tradition rolls, here’s the official Puppy Bowl site over on Discovery. It’s been going on since 2005, and there’s a lot to know. Here’s are some yummy takeaway treats from the press coverage (including, but not limited to People):
the special needs pups include Julius, a Dalmatian with hearing loss
Mykonos, an American Staffordshire terrier/bulldog with a cleft palate
Marmalade, a border collie/Australian cattle dog with sight and hearing impairments
It’ll be broadcast in so many places: Animal Planet, TBS, HBO Max, Discovery+
New this year: a behind-the-scenes look at the puppy red carpet, so animal lovers can peek at the pooches before they start warming up for the game
Make sure to also tune in for fan fave activities: the Kitten Halftime Show, which features felines from 3 different shelters; the Puppy Cheer Sqaud and the water bowl cameras
Other highlights that I am looking forward to:
Tom Barky, who will fit the bill in these days as Mr. Tom Brady has announced he’s retiring from people football again.
The sponsor-generated SUBARU OF AMERICA segments called “Pup Close and Personal,” which share the back stories of the adorable star athletes. Among those being featured include:
Cooper, a Boston terrier/ boxer mix from Seattle Humane and who marks the Emerald City’s debut in Puppy Bowl
Inya, a Chihuahua/ miniature Pinscher mix rescued by the Phoenix-based NAGI Foundation working to restore the sacredness of the Native American community by uniting people and animals
Those watching this big game will be using the #PuppyBowl hashtag — even on Twitter, despite the GRRRR-worthy changes in recent months thanks to that hooman fool named Elon, who fellow furry friends note has a musky smell about him. Make sure to follow the live-streaming from the ever-prolific Meep the Bird, too.
No doubt, it’s a big day.
Word is many humans are also geared up for the people-version of this Super Doggo Bowl Day, but I’m not so sure about that. I do know that I’ll be tuning in, with my ears perked as I stand at attention whenever the pups bark on the TV screen. I’m quite a-tune to that kind of stuff. We also have a squishy rubber football that I can chew on during the game, though it is rubbery and I’m not as much a fan of that. Plus, it doesn’t really squeak anymore but just makes an air flushing noise… so it’s not the best toy to play with.
Still, I’ll be tuning in and doing my #JournoDog thing, before hopefully getting some treats later in the day. As it should be, no matter what team wins.
That’s all for now. Until next time, whenever the news beckons like a barking dog you can’t help but pay attention to, #JournoDog out.
As always, remember: Love your dogs. Cats, too. Support local journalism. Get along with other people and pets, no matter what team you really root for. And try to smile and find a little happiness for your heart every day.
